So fighter can get a 2 cost action TWF feat to make an attack with both weapons equipped at their full attack bonus, but any additional attacks are at the 3+ penalty. Martial classes get access to feats alowing more than one attack at your current penalty (usually) as complex actions. Light (now agile) weapons reduce iterative penalty rather than allow more attacks. It's kinda like being upset you can't play a wizard when you picked fighter for your class - those feats are the options you pick to be a ranged character. I can understand that feeling like feats are necessary for a build/combat style to work properly can seem restrictive, but any form of effective play is going to ask for some subset of specific options to be chosen. It's true that their feat selections always look similar, because in terms of optimisation it's hard to justify not taking Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Multishot, Clustered Shots, etc etc. Ranged combat starts inconvenient, then has a large number of premium, powerful feats that make it the strongest martial build. If a melee character could take pounce in a two-feat chain with no other requirements, those would always be their first two feats as well (or maybe not, because they don't get access to multiple attacks as easily as ranged characters with Rapid Shot). Second edition is an entirely different game, it's less that it was removed and more that it's not necessary with the completely different action system (it's no longer optimal for all martials to try to full-attack every turn, to my understanding, so ranged characters being better able to stand still and attack with all their actions is less of an advantage).Īgain, Precise isn't required, but it is very good, because it makes attacking from a range trivial and positioning-independant (more totally than tabletop, where Improved Precise is also necessary before you can turn your brain off and just full attack every round until everything is dead).
